They didn't take over the soviet union, they created it from the downfall of Russia which was ruled by the czars(kings) at the time. It started off as soviet Russia but upon expanding into other states it became the soviet union. The first thing the communists did was kill of the bourgeois (rich upper class) as it was a "revolution for the working class".
