From a group of 9 people, you can pick anyone from the 9 for your first pick, but then because you have picked one already, for your second pick you can pick 8, and for your third pick you can pick anyone out of the 7. Because it asks how many ways, it would be 9*8*7 = 504. Hope this helps. I'm not that good so I may be wrong.
