Transport layer protocols communication with lower layer protocols in that they segment lower layer protocols into smaller chunks that fall within the network connections maximum transmission unit or as called as MTU. Transport layer protocols execute a discovery routine upon creating a connection with the network. Thereafter, the protocols segment each data unit as needed until departing the connection.
