x^2-34x-240=0

then simplify so

x^2-34x-240

put into brackets so

(x+6) (x-40) =0

x=-6, 40
x^2−34x−240=0

Factor left side of equation.

(x+6)(x−40)=0

Set factors equal to 0.

x+6=0 or x−40=0

x=−6 or x=40
