In order to solve this you need to isolate x by adding 3.4 to both sides of the equation which would give you x=13

x - 3.4 = 9.6   (the opposite of - 3.4 is + 3.4, so add 3.4 to each side)

x - 3.4 + 3.4 = 9.6 + 3.4
