Jose Marti was considered a national hero of Cuba. During his life he wrote poetry, was a philosopher, political theorist. He promoted the independence for Cuba from Spain and promoted political independence for Cuba and warned about how the expansionism from the United States and Spain would negatively impact Cuba.
We all see how that turned out but to them he is still a hero.
