Jacques Cartier was a French explorer .His major achievements was discovery of St. Lawrence River and giving Canada its name. And by discovering Canada he gained the land for his country to rule. He was born on December 31, 1491, in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France and was sent by his King to explore for riches.
